Boiler help

Boiler fault codes explained

Choose your boiler and type the code on its display. We’ll tell you what it means and what you can safely check yourself.

Smell gas? Don’t touch the boiler or any switches. Open windows, leave the property and call the National Gas Emergency line on 0800 111 999.

EA Ignition failureWorcester Bosch

The boiler tried to light but no flame was detected.

What you can safely try

  1. Check your gas is on: does the hob light? If you have a prepayment meter, check it has credit.
  2. In freezing weather, the plastic condensate pipe outside may be frozen. Pour warm (not boiling) water along it, then reset.
  3. Press the reset button once and wait a few minutes. Don’t keep resetting — if the code comes back, call an engineer.
227 Ignition failureWorcester Bosch

The boiler tried to light but no flame was detected.

What you can safely try

  1. Check your gas is on: does the hob light? If you have a prepayment meter, check it has credit.
  2. In freezing weather, the plastic condensate pipe outside may be frozen. Pour warm (not boiling) water along it, then reset.
  3. Press the reset button once and wait a few minutes. Don’t keep resetting — if the code comes back, call an engineer.
CE Low water pressureWorcester Bosch

The heating system has lost pressure, so the boiler has stopped to protect itself.

What you can safely try

  1. Check the pressure gauge. If it’s below 1 bar, top it up to 1–1.5 bar using the filling loop (see your boiler manual), then reset the boiler.
  2. If the pressure keeps dropping, look for drips around radiators, valves and the boiler’s pressure relief pipe outside.
  3. Press the reset button once and wait a few minutes. Don’t keep resetting — if the code comes back, call an engineer.
207 Low water pressureWorcester Bosch

The heating system has lost pressure, so the boiler has stopped to protect itself.

  2. If the pressure keeps dropping, look for drips around radiators, valves and the boiler’s pressure relief pipe outside.
  3. Press the reset button once and wait a few minutes. Don’t keep resetting — if the code comes back, call an engineer.
E9 Overheat protectionWorcester Bosch

The boiler got too hot and a safety device switched it off — usually circulation or pressure related.

What you can safely try

  1. Check the pressure gauge. If it’s below 1 bar, top it up to 1–1.5 bar using the filling loop (see your boiler manual), then reset the boiler.
  2. Press the reset button once and wait a few minutes. Don’t keep resetting — if the code comes back, call an engineer.
  3. This needs a Gas Safe engineer — please don’t open the boiler casing.
224 Overheat protectionWorcester Bosch

F29 Flame lost while runningVaillant

The flame went out during operation — often a gas supply, flue or condensate problem.

F75 Pressure sensor / pumpVaillant

The boiler didn’t detect a pressure rise when the pump started.

What you can safely try

  1. Check the pressure gauge. If it’s below 1 bar, top it up to 1–1.5 bar using the filling loop (see your boiler manual), then reset the boiler.
  2. If radiators are cold at the top, bleed them, then top the pressure back up.
